Bulk physical storage of renewable energy produced gases can act as a longer-term storage solution (hours, days, weeks, months) to help maintain flexibility in a fossil-free energy grid (The Danish Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells). Without the hydrogen scenario, the potential for hydrogen-based energy storage in Denmark will be limited.

In summary, the scenarios illustrate the recent or close to current state of the Danish Energy system (2020) and how it can be developed to support the short-term national targets in 2030 while enabling an adequate long-term transition towards a 100 % RE and fully decarbonized energy system of 2045.
What is the TES capacity in Danish district heating?
The current Danish district heating TES capacity is around 80 GWh, corresponding to 20 % of the maximum analyzed capacity in the scenarios. To evaluate the techno-economic impact and role of TES in the energy system, a set of evaluation parameters are chosen to analyze the role of TES.
